XTERRA was founded in 1996 as a series of off-road triathlon races for professional athletes. This new racing format, which began on Maui, Hawaii, consisted of an open-ocean swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. “Aquaterra” as it was called, was the culmination of the common spirit between triathletes, mountain bikers, and those who craved the challenges that the outdoor experience offered. There are XTERRA races sponsored all over the world- some of their locales include Italy, the Philippines, New Zealand, Switzerland and numerous locations throughout the USA on the America Tour. There are two racing divisions: one for professional athletes and the other for “age-groupers”. XTERRA’s mission has garnered so much attention that car manufacturer Nissan even named one of their models after the races. They also produce full wetsuits and long johns.
