What Is Water Polo? Rules, Positions & Gear

by Nicole Villamor on Sep 14, 2026
Water polo equipment beside an indoor swimming pool

What is water polo? It is a fast, physical team sport played in a pool, where two teams swim, pass, defend, and shoot to send a ball into the other team's goal. The sport combines swimming endurance with the spacing and passing of basketball, the scoring objective of soccer, and constant one-on-one competition in the water.

What Is Water Polo?

Water polo is a timed team game in which players keep themselves afloat while moving a ball toward a defended goal. Seven players from each team are normally in the water at once: six field players and one goalkeeper. Teams attack by creating passing lanes and shooting opportunities, then switch quickly to defense when possession changes.

The sport is played in a marked area of a swimming pool. Players cannot simply stand or walk during normal play, so they use a leg movement called eggbeater kick to stay high in the water while passing, defending, or preparing to shoot. That constant movement is one reason the sport feels different from a land-based ball game.

Water polo is also a contact sport. Players jostle for position, protect the ball, and defend without holding, sinking, or pulling an opponent illegally. Beginners should expect to learn skills in stages: first swimming and body position, then passing and shooting, followed by team spacing and defensive decisions.

What Is the Objective of the Game?

The objective is simple: score more goals than the opposing team before the final period ends. A goal counts when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the goal posts and below the crossbar. Because possession can change quickly, teams must attack with patience while staying ready to defend a counterattack.

On offense, the team with the ball uses passes, swimming movements, and screens to create an open shot. A player may pass to a teammate on the perimeter, feed the center forward near the goal, or drive toward open water. The defense tries to block passing lanes, challenge shots, and force the attacking team into a poor position or a turnover.

Unlike a swimming race, water polo rewards decisions as much as speed. A player who recognizes an open teammate, protects the ball under pressure, or rotates into the correct space can change a possession without taking a shot. Communication matters because the goalkeeper and field players must coordinate while the game moves around them.

How Does a Water Polo Match Work?

A water polo match is played in periods, with short breaks that let teams regroup and make substitutions. Many standard competitions use four quarters, although period length, pool dimensions, and other details can vary by league, age group, or governing body. Before playing or officiating, check the rules for the specific competition.

Play commonly begins with a sprint for the ball at center pool. After a goal, teams reset and play restarts at mid-pool. During a possession, the attacking team moves the ball around the perimeter, looks for an opening, and shoots before the possession expires. The defense presses, blocks, and contests space while trying to regain the ball.

Substitutions are an important part of game flow because water polo requires repeated bursts of swimming and wrestling for position. Players may leave through a designated re-entry area, and substitutions are also allowed at approved stoppages such as goals, timeouts, or between periods. Coaches use fresh players to maintain pressure and manage fatigue.

For a competition-specific explanation of pool markings, player numbers, restarts, and foul classifications, review USA Water Polo's guide to understanding the game. Local youth and club competitions may adapt rules for the players' age and experience.

What Are the Main Water Polo Positions?

Water polo positions describe a player's usual responsibility, but players must rotate and help one another throughout a possession. The goalkeeper protects the goal, the center players compete near the goal, and perimeter players create passing angles, drive into space, and defend the outside. Learning each role helps new players understand where to look and move.

Goalkeeper Protect the goal and organize the defense Reaction time, positioning, communication, explosive leg power
Center forward Establish position near the opposing goal and create scoring pressure Body position, strength, hands, passing, finishing
Center defender Defend the center forward and disrupt close-range chances Awareness, leverage, anticipation, legal defensive pressure
Drivers Swim into open water to receive a pass or draw a defender Acceleration, timing, change of direction, ball control
Wings and perimeter players Move the ball around the outside and create shooting lanes Passing, shooting, vision, spacing, defensive recovery

Goalkeeper

The goalkeeper is the last defender and the player with the clearest view of the entire pool. Goalkeepers communicate defensive coverage, track shots, and use their legs to rise high in the water. They wear a distinctive cap, commonly red in formal competition, with ear guards and a number that matches their team identification.

Center forward and center defender

The center forward works close to the opponent's goal, where a strong position can create a shot, draw a foul, or open a pass to a teammate. The center defender battles to deny that position and protect the area in front of the goal. These players need patience because contact and body positioning can determine the result before the ball arrives.

Drivers, wings, and perimeter players

Perimeter players keep the offense balanced and prevent defenders from collapsing on the center. Drivers swim through open lanes to create movement, while wings and other outside players pass, shoot, and recover on defense. A beginner may start in different perimeter roles while learning how to read the field and communicate with teammates.

What Are the Basic Water Polo Rules?

The basic rules make water polo competitive while limiting unsafe contact. Exact rules differ by federation and competition, but beginners should understand possession, legal contact, ordinary fouls, exclusion fouls, the goal area, and how play restarts. A coach or referee should explain the rules used by a specific team before a first game.

  • Teams defend a goal: Each team tries to move the ball into the opponent's goal while protecting its own.
  • Field players usually use one hand: The goalkeeper has special privileges, including the ability to use both hands in the goal area.
  • Players must keep moving: In a deep pool, players tread water rather than standing on the bottom during normal play.
  • Holding and sinking are not legal defense: Players may contest position, but grabbing, pulling back, or pushing an opponent underwater can result in a foul.
  • Fouls restart play: An ordinary foul commonly gives the fouled team a free throw, while more serious personal fouls can lead to exclusion or a penalty.
  • Three personal fouls can remove a player: Under common competition rules, a player who reaches the limit of major fouls must leave the game.
  • The two-meter area matters: In rule sets that use a two-meter restriction, an attacking player cannot enter that area without the ball.
  • The five-meter area affects penalties: A defensive foul that prevents a probable goal inside the five-meter area may result in a penalty throw.
  • The ball must fully cross the goal line: A shot that touches the line but does not completely cross it is not a goal.

Water polo rules can be adjusted for age-group play, school leagues, and local tournaments. Treat the list above as a beginner's map rather than a replacement for the official rulebook. Ask the coach how the team handles exclusions, substitutions, shot clocks, pool markings, and contact during practice.

What Equipment Does a Beginner Need?

Beginner water polo equipment should help a player stay secure in the water, protect vulnerable areas, and carry wet gear between practices. The team may provide game balls, matching caps, or some safety equipment, so ask before buying a complete setup. Start with items that fit correctly and are made for repeated pool use.

Water polo suit

A water polo suit needs a secure fit and durable construction because opponents may grab fabric during legal position battles. Women's suits are commonly designed with coverage and straps that stay secure, while men's suits are built to resist stretching and shifting. Choose the correct category for the player and follow the manufacturer's sizing guidance instead of assuming a standard swimwear size.

Swim2000's men's water polo suits and women's water polo suits collections make it easier to compare sport-specific options. For a broad starting point, browse the water polo collection and choose a suit intended for the demands of the sport.

Water polo cap

Water polo caps identify teams and protect the ears with hard ear guards. A cap should fit securely without creating painful pressure, and the chin ties should be adjusted so the cap stays in place during swimming and contact. Teams often use numbered home and away caps in games, while players may use a personal cap for practice.

Mouthguard and practice goggles

A mouthguard can help protect the teeth and mouth during contact, but it must fit well enough for the player to breathe and communicate. Goggles may be useful during swimming drills or individual practice, even though players generally do not wear them during a match. Follow the coach's guidance and choose protective equipment appropriate for the player's age.

Ball, gear bag, and poolside layers

A water polo ball has a textured surface that helps players grip it with wet hands. A mesh bag keeps a suit, cap, towel, mouthguard case, and other wet items together while allowing them to drain. A warm layer and dry clothes are also practical after practice, especially when the player has spent a long session treading water.

For a more detailed packing list, read Swim2000's water polo gear checklist for new players. It covers the essential suit, cap, mouthguard, goggles, bag, towel, and post-practice layers without making beginners buy everything at once.

How Can a New Player Prepare for the First Practice?

The best first-practice preparation is a combination of swimming comfort, simple communication, and correctly fitted equipment. A new player does not need to master every position before arriving. Showing up ready to tread water, listen to instructions, pass safely, and repeat basic movements gives a beginner a useful foundation.

  1. Confirm the team requirements: Ask whether the coach supplies caps, balls, or mouthguards, and find out which suit style is expected.
  2. Test the fit at home: Adjust the cap, check the mouthguard, and make sure the suit stays comfortable through a full range of movement.
  3. Practice water comfort: Work on floating, changing direction, and treading water with an instructor or qualified coach.
  4. Learn a few terms: Know the difference between offense, defense, a free throw, an exclusion, and a penalty throw.
  5. Bring recovery basics: Pack water, a towel, dry clothes, and a warm layer so the player can leave the pool comfortable.

Parents can help by checking the team's safety policy and asking how the coach introduces contact. Children and new adult players should learn technique in a supervised setting rather than copying advanced contact drills without instruction. Water polo is demanding, but good coaching turns the first session into a clear sequence of manageable skills.

Is Water Polo an Olympic Sport?

Yes. Water polo is an Olympic team sport with a long competitive history. Olympic competition has helped introduce the sport to wider audiences, but a beginner does not need Olympic-level experience to start. Club, school, recreation, and masters programs can all provide entry points at different skill levels.

Water polo's Olympic history shows how the sport combines endurance, tactics, and team play on an international stage. For someone choosing a local team, the most important questions are practical: Is the program beginner-friendly, how often does it practice, what equipment does it provide, and what swimming ability does it expect?

Start With the Basics, Then Build Game Awareness

Water polo becomes easier to understand when a new player separates the game into four ideas: stay afloat, protect the ball, move into useful space, and defend legally. Positions give players a starting responsibility, but the entire team must pass, communicate, rotate, and recover together. Repetition turns those ideas into instinct.

Water Polo FAQ

Can you touch the bottom in water polo?

Players normally cannot stand on the bottom during play in a deep competition pool. They use eggbeater kick and other treading techniques to stay afloat. Pool depth and rules can vary for youth or instructional sessions, so follow the coach's instructions at the facility where you practice.

How many players are on a water polo team?

Seven players from each team are normally in the water at once: six field players and one goalkeeper. Teams also have substitutes who enter through a designated re-entry area or during approved stoppages, depending on the competition rules.

What does a water polo goalkeeper wear?

A goalkeeper wears a distinctive cap with ear guards and a number that identifies the player. In many formal competitions, goalkeeper caps are red. The goalkeeper also wears a suit appropriate for water polo and uses specialized positioning and leg strength to protect the goal.

Is water polo hard for beginners?

Water polo is challenging because players swim, tread water, pass, and defend at the same time. A beginner can progress by building swimming endurance, learning eggbeater kick, practicing short passes, and joining a coach-led program. The sport becomes more manageable when skills are taught progressively.

Do water polo players wear goggles?

Players may wear goggles during swimming drills or individual practice, but goggles are generally not worn during a match because of contact and competition requirements. Ask the coach which eye protection is permitted for the team's practices and games.
